Hi.

Here's a list of Tom De Smedt's main involvements.

I'm an artist, software engineer and a cognitive science hobbyist.
Right now I'm pursuing my PhD on computational creativity. I'm affiliated with the Experimental Media group (Sint Lucas School of Arts, Antwerp) and the Computational Psycholinguistics group (University of Antwerp).  When I have time to spare I'm developing for NodeBox, collaborating on a computer game called City In A Bottle or removing weeds from my garden.

nodeboxNodeBox : NodeBox is a Mac OS X application for graphic designers in which you use programming code instead of mouse-clicking and menus to design. My work includes modules for image compositing, natural language processing, graphs, various AI and Bézier math.

Gravital - In 2006 I wrote a research funding proposal for IWT (Institute for the Promotion of Innovation by Science and Technology in Flanders). This resulted in a project called Gravital, a NodeBox spin-off which we're now finishing up on. The project is in collaboration with the department of Computer Linguistics at the University of Antwerp.

City In A Bottle - A computer game based on the principles of evolution through natural selection and emergence, funded by VAF (Flemish Audiovisual Fund).

Articles - The texts that used to be on replica.trapdoor.be - humor, graphic design and meanderings into AI, psychology and philosophy. Written with Tom Van Iersel. I keep them around for my own entertainment.

Mecca - An imaginary world in hypertext form: descriptions can be linked and read in any order. Written in reasonably readable English some years ago with a bunch of friends. That was fun.

Trapdoor - The old website (surviving since 2004 I think) - a chaotic mess of nostalgia.

News: I will be giving a lecture at the ISEA2010 conference in Ruhr, Germany, 20-29 august. There's an exhibition in Lahti, Finland 18/06 till 05/09 (more details to follow). We (Ludivine Lechat & me) are also working on a piece permanently exhibited at IMEC.
